Higher Ground eBook Nan Lowe
If this is her debut, I can't wait to see what else Nan Lowe has in store for her readers. I've been a fan of her FanFiction writing for years. Higher Ground was everything I knew it would be.I'm a terrible reviewer. Not a writer here, so I'll just say I freaking loved it! Nan knows how to put her readers in the moment. I'm from the south. I grew up in New Orleans. Still go there every year for the holidays to visit my huge loud family. My college diploma is one of the very last that reads Memphis State University (now U of M.). So, yes I'm a southern girl. I know when a writer is getting this shit right. Nan gets it right. I feel like I'm there walking down Magazine Street, I can taste the powdered sugar on the beignets and it feels amazing.
In Higher Ground she takes us back and forth through the main character, Violet's past and present. Through her struggles as a teen that brought her to the very happy life she's living. But, it's a life that doesn't include her once beloved New Orleans or her friends from high school. Didn't we all do things in high school we would like to be able to box up and never let out again? Well, Violet certainly did. Until one day she gets a phone call from her brother, she's been able to keep that box of secrets taped up and away from her amazing boyfriend Wade. I loved Violet and Wade and so much about this story. This will definitely be reading this one again.

Higher Ground eBook Nan Lowe Reviews
**vague spoilers ahead... maybe. i can never really tell so proceed with caution**
Ugh this one completely wrecked me. I couldn't figure it out for a really long time. and when I did, it still didn't prepare me for the reveal. Violet is an amazing character, flawed and human, just a like the rest of us. it was nice being in her shoes as she suffered through memory after memory of what was both a good and bad time of her life. as she recounts her experiences to her love, Wade, you can feel her pain and her own self being pulled in two ways... one part of her drowning in the past and one year night for the present and future.
Oliver was such a complex character. I was so furious at him for a long time, but at the prom was where every bit of anger bled right out of me. it was then I figured out what would happen. and even when I knew... when it was confirmed, I still bruised heavily.
life isn't always pretty and relationships are trying. love isn't always fair, either, and this story shows you exactly that.
great writing and story telling and gorgeous cover art to suit. I know there was also a great team working together behind the scenes to make this story come alive, so kudos to all involved.
This book. *sigh* I don't even know if a 5 star review can fully describe how much I loved this book. The flashback and back to present was was brilliant. Kept me on my toes... knowing something happened in Violet's past but only getting snippets was the best torture. Like Vi, I had a bit of a dodgy teenagehood. I could really relate to Vi - seeing the questionable decisions she was making, and feeling all of the feels from my own past in sympathy.
The flow, and the depth of this writing left me yearning for more from Nan. If you are looking for an authentic book, something to get lost in and all twisty over... this is it.
I just finished reading Higher Ground by Nan Lowe and what a great read it was! Violet is a college professor who seems to have her life together with a great job and a great relationship but a call to return to her hometown to attend a family wedding turns her world upside down as she is forced to deal with things from her past that she has long ago boxed up and wrapped up.
Nan does an amazing job of writing this story by alternating the present with the past as she reveals her dark teenage experiences to her boyfriend Wade. My heart broke and many times I felt myself saying Violet stop don’t you see-but when you are a teenager and in love you often can’t see a situation clearly. The story really shows you can't really move forward if you don't reconcile your past.
In addition to the great (nail biting) plot that had me unable to stop reading I loved the characters, the setting of New Orleans and all the good food!
I look forward to Nan’s next book!
I had an inner battle about leaving a review at all, but I bought this book because it intrigued me and I expected it to wow me. I always intended to read and review, so here I am. I went in with high expectations, and maybe that's my fault, due to the quality of writing I've read from this author in the past. But her writing, as always, was spectacular. The scenes were vivid and imaginable. It's the plot that let me down. I readily admit to loving angst, but the whole time I was reading, I was waiting for the past to interfere in the present. When it finally did, it wasn't impactful at all to me. You're reading, reading, reading to get ... there ... and then it's "Is that all? Is that what this whole book has led to?"
The story she told, of Violet and Wade, was a tough moment in the couple's life, but giving me this whole backstory romance that never materializes in the present, was the let down. it's definitely different than the status quo, and I applaud her for throwing us a curve and for writing it beautifully. I will still probably read whatever's next because I know she has more up her sleeve.
This is a novel about a woman who has to face her past in order to embrace her future. The settings of Atlanta (today) and New Orleans (in flashbacks) were a draw for this Southern girl who enjoys both cities. But what kept me turning the pages was Nan Lowe's ability to write characters who seem so relatable. She writes families so real you will swear she spied on your awkward holiday dinners. The slow reveal of Violet's past as she is sharing it with her lover in stories is a roller coaster of emotions, from awkward teenage angst to the euphoria of first love.
I so enjoyed experiencing Violet's triumphs, stumbles and steadfast determination. She is all of us who have made choices we regret as well as ones that make us feel on top of the world. I look forward to reading more from this author. It's truly one of the best reads I've enjoyed in a long time.
